How Senior Citizens Can Remain Healthy Through Proper Diet

Are you now anticipating to reach what most people call the “golden years”? Are you ready for it? Well, it’s inevitable that all of us will grow old and you should expect some changes to happen. But then, the real question is “How would you like to spend your time when you reach 50 or 60”? Many of us will surely consider retirement and just staying at home. But surely, all of us want to stay in shape and remain healthy when we reach this age. We will not be as strong as young people but then we can still remain healthy and be more alert compared to people our age so we can still work or do the things we love to do.

Elder people who still want to remain strong and alert should be careful in choosing the foods that they eat. During this period, an elder man’s body is very different from that of a young man so many factors should be considered especially when it comes to food and vitamin intake. Healthy living is very important and their diet should fruits, fish, vegetables and other healthy foods. Vitamins and health supplements that are manufactured by credible companies and suggested by their doctor should also be considered.

For the elderly, among the essential virtamins is Vitamin D. Foods that are rich in Vitamin D should be added to their diet and an example of a good source of Vitamin D is chicken meat. Vitamins D and Calcium are important for senior citizens in order to fight osteoporosis and keep their bones strong. They need at least 1500 milligrams of calcium per day.

Apart from our physical look that changes when we grow old, we can also feel the changes in our digestive system. Some foods should now be avoided because at time, it cannot be digested fast and this can cause us stomach troubles. Regular intake of foods that are rich in fiber is very important. Increase of fluid intake is also important and the best fluid that they should drink is water. We should all definitely take 8 or more glasses of water per day.               

Eating foods that contain antioxidants is also important for seniors since they need to regularly dispose the harmful elements inside the body. There are fruits that are rich in as antioxidants and these include apples, blueberries, cranberries and a lot more. While some chicken parts can also be considered as high in antioxidant, the healthiest part of the chicken is the breast part and you can prepare your favorite almond chicken using this part.

Last but not the least, foods that are rich in protein can also help elders remain healthy and strong.  Seafoods are among the good source of protein but unknown to some people, chicken meat is also high in good protein and cooking lemon chicken recipes would be good for the diet.
